What a Payday Loan Is For
A payday loan is a short-term loan designed to bridge a temporary cash flow gap until your next salary arrives — not a long-term financing tool. In Singapore, licensed moneylenders offer payday loans with fast processing and smaller loan quantums suited to short-term needs.
When It Makes Sense
- An unexpected, one-off expense — a medical bill, urgent repair, or time-sensitive payment — that arises before your next paycheque.
- You have a clear, confirmed repayment date — your next salary or another guaranteed inflow — within the loan tenure.
- The shortfall is small and well-defined, not an ongoing gap between income and expenses.
When It Doesn’t Make Sense
- Recurring monthly shortfalls — if you find yourself needing a payday loan every month, the underlying issue is your budget, not a one-off gap, and taking on more short-term debt will compound the problem.
- Discretionary spending — payday loans are not intended for non-essential purchases.
- Rolling one loan into another — borrowing to repay an existing loan is a sign to reassess your finances rather than take on further debt.
Know the Terms Before You Borrow
Under the Moneylenders Act, interest on a payday loan from a licensed moneylender is capped at 4% per month on the reducing balance, late interest is capped at 4% per month on the overdue amount, late fees are capped at S$60 per month, and total borrowing costs are capped at 100% of the principal. Ask your consultant for the exact repayment amount and schedule in writing before you sign.
